The Ikeuchi Hamono Hunting Knife is the result of extensive field tests and collaboration with experienced hunters. Made in Japan, it combines lightness, robustness, and long-lasting sharpness for all your outdoor needs – from hunting to camping. Crafted from Aogami (Blue Paper) Steel, this knife offers everything you expect from a reliable Japanese tool in nature, much like the Ken-Nata – a traditional Japanese tool known for its versatility in outdoor tasks such as pruning, cutting, and personal defense.

A Bowie Blade Built for Every Task

The core of the blade is premium Aogami (Blue Paper) Steel 2, encased in two layers of soft iron (gokunantetsu). This san-mai (three-layer) construction ensures exceptional sharpness and easy maintenance. With its classic Bowie shape, the knife is perfect for both precise cuts and heavy-duty tasks. The hammer-strike texture on the blade adds a rugged, functional aesthetic.

Handcrafted for Durability and Heritage

Expertly crafted by the Ikeuchi Hamono, the knife is marked with the kanji 焱 (En) near the handle, symbolizing fire and the three generations of the Ikeuchi family – Mr. Hiroumi Ikeuchi, his father, and his grandfather, who founded Ikeuchi Hamono. This engravement represents the passing of knowledge and tradition through the family lineage. The marking 秀存昭三作 (Shuzon Shozou Saku) on the blade signifies that it was made by Mr. Hiroumi Ikeuchi, honoring his grandfather, Shuzon, the founder of the Ikeuchi Hamono brand.

The knife features a handle made from smoked oak, a durable and elegant material that offers a secure grip. The forged iron guard provides stability and protection, and the paracord lanyard ensures control even in wet conditions.

After use, the blade should be wiped with a dry cloth and coated with anti-rust oil for storage.

Built for the Outdoors

Equipped with a genuine leather sheath and a belt loop, the Ikeuchi Hamono Hunting Knife is ready for reliable carrying in the field. Whether you’re hunting, camping, or engaging in other outdoor activities, this knife, like the Ken-Nata, offers the versatility and durability you need. Every detail, from the steel to the final stitch, is crafted to withstand the toughest outdoor conditions.

☝️ Japanese kitchen knives in our store are handmade from natural materials. ☝️ THIS KNIFE MAY DEVELOP PATINA

Knives made of carbon steels can, due to their low chromium (Cr) content, discolor and develop patina. The knife is the most sensitive when it is still new and a patina had not developed yet, but later, patina will protect the blade. These types of knives require a touch more care:

✔ Wipe it regularly with a clean and dry cloth (you can also do this during use).
✔ After use, rinse it with lukewarm water and wipe it dry.
✔ Coat it regularly with knife maintenance oil or plain refined sunflower oil.
✔ Store the knife by wrapping it in paper which will absorb moisture and protect the blade.

A patina is a thin layer that forms on the surface of oxidized steel and protects it from further oxidation. The patina should not be confused with rust. Patina protects the blade, while rust causes corrosion and deterioration of material, so it should be removed (see Rust erasers).

→ For in-depth information about patina, read our dedicated post on patina.

GENERAL KNIFE CARE TIPS:

Blade wear depends on the quality of steel, usage and maintenance of the blade. Japanese knives are made of high-quality steels. Follow these tips to keep your Japanese knife in top-notch shape:

✔ Use a wooden, plastic or rubber cutting board.
✔ After use, wash the knives and wipe them dry.
✔ For storage, use a knife holder or a protective knife sheath (saya).
✔ A good cutting technique is your best bet to prolong sharpness.
✔ Use sharpening stones to sharpen the knife.

❗️Don’t leave the knife in the sink. Wash it by hand.
❗️Don’t wash the knife in the dishwasher.
❗️Don’t use the knife on glass, ceramics, marble or steel surfaces.
❗️Don’t scrape the food off the cutting board with the edge of the blade. Use the spine of the knife instead.
❗️Knife is a tool intended for specific use - cutting food. It is not a can opener, screwdriver, trowel, wire cutter, hammer etc.
