Ken Nata Outdoor Knife Black Finish 155mm is a compact Japanese field knife for camping, bushcraft, pruning, and woodwork. Its robust Aogami #2 (Blue Paper Steel #2) blade offers excellent sharpness and edge retention, while the traditional black kuro-uchi finish and durable oak handle complete its rugged design. Handcrafted by blacksmith Mr. Oda in Kochi Prefecture, Japan.

🚩 Carbon steel develops a patina with use. This is normal, but the blade must be dried well to prevent rust.

The Ken Nata Outdoor Knife Black Finish is a compact Japanese field knife designed for pruning, carving, preparing food, cutting rope, and making tinder. Inspired by the traditional Japanese ken-nata, it combines a practical, robust blade with the precision of Japanese craftsmanship.

If your idea of “me time” includes firewood, wild terrain, and something sizzling over the flames, meet your new outdoor companion.

COMPACT, STRONG AND VERSATILE

With a 155mm blade, this Ken Nata feels substantial without becoming cumbersome. Its pointed tip provides control for detailed work, while the thick spine and robust blade geometry support stronger cuts when working with wood and other outdoor materials.

The compact format makes it easy to carry and maneuver around camp, whether you're preparing food, carving wood, trimming branches, or making kindling.

AOGAMI #2 STEEL

The blade is made from Aogami #2 (Blue Paper Steel #2), a traditional Japanese high-carbon steel known for its excellent sharpness, good edge retention, and resistance to wear.

The dark kuro-uchi finish gives the blade its rugged appearance and can provide some protection against corrosion. However, Aogami #2 is not stainless steel and can develop a natural patina or rust when exposed to moisture.

To keep the blade in good condition, clean and dry it thoroughly after use and apply a thin layer of protective oil before longer storage.

HANDCRAFTED IN KOCHI, JAPAN

This Ken Nata is made by blacksmith Mr. Oda in Tosayamada, Kami City, Kochi Prefecture, Japan.

Kochi Prefecture is home to the traditional Tosa blacksmithing heritage, known for producing durable cutting tools for forestry, agriculture, and outdoor work.

Mr. Oda's work continues this regional tradition of creating practical Japanese blades designed for demanding everyday tasks.

OAK HANDLE

The knife features a sturdy oak wood handle, a dense and durable hardwood well suited to traditional Japanese outdoor tools.

The handle provides a comfortable, secure grip and good control when carving, pruning, and working with wood.

MADE FOR THE OUTDOORS

The 136 mm (5.4") handle provides sufficient leverage for controlled, confident cutting. Its compact proportions make the knife practical for camping, bushcraft, gardening, and outdoor food preparation.

Use it for pruning, carving, slicing, cutting rope, and preparing tinder. Despite its robust build, avoid striking stone, metal, or other extremely hard materials directly with the cutting edge.

☝️ THIS KNIFE MAY DEVELOP PATINA

Knives made of carbon steels can, due to their low chromium (Cr) content, discolor and develop patina. The knife is the most sensitive when it is still new and a patina had not developed yet, but later, patina will protect the blade. These types of knives require a touch more care:

✔ Wipe it regularly with a clean and dry cloth (you can also do this during use).
✔ After use, rinse it with lukewarm water and wipe it dry.
✔ Coat it regularly with knife maintenance oil or plain refined sunflower oil.
✔ Store the knife by wrapping it in paper which will absorb moisture and protect the blade.

A patina is a thin layer that forms on the surface of oxidized steel and protects it from further oxidation. The patina should not be confused with rust. Patina protects the blade, while rust causes corrosion and deterioration of material, so it should be removed (see Rust erasers).

→ For in-depth information about patina, read our dedicated post on patina.

GENERAL KNIFE CARE TIPS:

Blade wear depends on the quality of steel, usage and maintenance of the blade. Japanese knives are made of high-quality steels. Follow these tips to keep your Japanese knife in top-notch shape:

✔ Use a wooden, plastic or rubber cutting board.
✔ After use, wash the knives and wipe them dry.
✔ For storage, use a knife holder or a protective knife sheath (saya).
✔ A good cutting technique is your best bet to prolong sharpness.
✔ Use sharpening stones to sharpen the knife.

❗️Don’t leave the knife in the sink. Wash it by hand.
❗️Don’t wash the knife in the dishwasher.
❗️Don’t use the knife on glass, ceramics, marble or steel surfaces.
❗️Don’t scrape the food off the cutting board with the edge of the blade. Use the spine of the knife instead.
❗️Knife is a tool intended for specific use - cutting food. It is not a can opener, screwdriver, trowel, wire cutter, hammer etc.
