A compact bushcraft hatchet by Mizuno Seisakusho — a renowned smithy in Sanjo City, Japan, home to certified traditional craftsman Isao Mizuno. Forged by hand using traditional techniques and refined through user feedback, this versatile hatchet blends heritage craftsmanship with outdoor functionality.
Each piece is hand-forged in Sanjo, Niigata Prefecture — a region known for centuries of blacksmithing tradition. The ax head is oil-treated (not varnished), preserving the natural texture of the steel and enhancing corrosion resistance. The blade is engraved with Mizuno’s signature mark — trusted by professionals in Japan and beyond.
BLADE SHAPE:
This hatchet features a wide, thin blade forged for precision as much as power. The geometry is optimized for bushcraft carving: a fine edge that bites into wood cleanly, but with enough mass to handle light splitting tasks. The spine near the head retains thickness for strength, while the edge tapers down smoothly to allow for controlled, shallow cuts.
Unlike heavier, wedge-shaped axes designed solely for splitting, this blade strikes a balance — agile enough for detailed work, yet robust enough for firewood prep. The subtle curve of the edge also helps in drawing cuts and planing-style motions during carving or shaving.
Use: Bushcraft, firewood prep, feather sticks, outdoor crafting
STEEL:
Crafted from S45C carbon steel, this hatchet offers excellent edge retention and toughness — ideal for repeated chopping, batoning, and heavy outdoor use.
BLADE FINSIH:
The kuro-uchi finish adds rustic character while helping protect against corrosion and wear.
HANDLE:
Crafted from Japanese white oak, the shortened curved handle is shaped for control and portability. Its egg-shaped grip fits securely in hand, offering precision and comfort during extended use.
Please note: In drier climates, the axe head may loosen slightly over time — a natural characteristic of traditional Japanese joinery. If it happens, simply tap the base of the handle with a rubber mallet to re-seat the head. Then lightly tap the steel collar at the top to gently compress the wood and secure the fit again.
SAYA:
Includes a premium leather sheath treated with multiple layers of neatsfoot oil and lightly aged for a weathered look. Brass-tone rivets with a matte antique finish and Sanada cord straps from Sumiya (a traditional Kaga weaving company) add heritage details and carry function. Over time, the leather will patinate beautifully alongside the darkened forged head.
SMITHY:
Founded in 1937, Mizuno Seisakusho began as a specialist in plane blades before shifting to axes and hatchets as woodworking needs changed. Under the skilled hand of Isao Mizuno — a certified traditional craftsman — the workshop continues to craft tools rooted in Sanjo's blacksmithing heritage, adapted for today’s outdoor demands.
