Naniwa #220 grit stone is used for coarse sharpening of damaged or totally blunt blades, as well as for thinning the blade. It can also work as a substitute for a Flattening stone. This stone is part of Naniwa's Traditional (their economy) line of sharpening stones.

Sharpening stone (whetstone) from Japanese producer Naniwa enables fast and efficient sharpening of Japanese knives. The main difference between the Traditional and Sharpening/Super Stone series is the soaking time - we soak the Traditional line stones in water for about 10 minutes before sharpening. All their other series are splash-and-go stones.

Material:
Unlike most Naniwa stones, the manufacturer here opted for silicon carbide, mainly because it is harder than aluminum oxide. Although the stone wears out faster, it gains an advantage when grinding harder blades (over 63 HRC) and is thus more effective.

The advantage of sharpening with a whetstone is that by using the correct techniques, we can achieve a remarkable sharpness of the blade. However, it is necessary to learn the correct technique.

For easier sharpening, we recommend purchasing a Stone Holder (Sink Bridge) to ensure mess-free and a stable position of the stone during sharpening.

Specifications:

Grit: #220

*Sidenote: Due to market expansion, Naniwa often changes the product name and its packaging - the Naniwa Traditional stone is the same stone as the Naniwa Standard stone, with the same composition and characteristics.

Hello, thanks for the answer and advice. Perhaps my rating of the whetstone turned out a bit too harsh. After all, the whetstone does sharpen. If any future buyer ever reads this comment, they should know that I did not consult the SharpEdge staff before buying the whetstone. I believe they would have known how to advise me properly.

Too soft whetstone for carpentry tools

Opinion After more than a year of use I can say that Naniwa Traditional 220 T-102 is unfortunately not worth 45€. It is worth mentioning that there are two versions, T-901 and T-102, it may be that T-901 is better. Weaknesses: Given how quickly the whetstone crumbles, the sharpening speed is not high enough. The surface hollows out extremely quickly, so the whetstone is not suitable for carpentry tools, which require as flat stones as possible. Advantages: Beautiful, even, diffuse scratch pattern. Long soaking is not necessary, the stone is not too thirsty (relatively speaking, given the grit)

Hello,

Thank you very much for taking the time to test the stone and for writing us a detailed report.

As you have found out, the T-102 and T-901 stones are very different. The T-102 uses silicon carbide as the abrasive, while the T-901 uses aluminum oxide. The T-102 water-based whetstone wears out faster, as it is intended for sharpening kitchen knives, where a softer stone is desired, which will sharpen faster with a lower granulation.

For sharpening carpentry tools, we recommend a harder stone, such as the T-901, as it maintains a flat surface for a longer time. A diamond stone would be even more suitable, as it will not wear out as quickly and will remain flat.

If you want a harder stone, we also have the Naniwo Traditional 220 T-901 in stock, as well as some diamond discs that we can offer you.

Kind regards,
David SharpEdge
