Naniwa #220 grit stone is used for coarse sharpening of damaged or totally blunt blades, as well as for thinning the blade. It can also work as a substitute for a Flattening stone. This stone is part of Naniwa's Traditional (their economy) line of sharpening stones.
Sharpening stone (whetstone) from Japanese producer Naniwa enables fast and efficient sharpening of Japanese knives. The main difference between the Traditional and Sharpening/Super Stone series is the soaking time - we soak the Traditional line stones in water for about 10 minutes before sharpening. All their other series are splash-and-go stones.
Material:
Unlike most Naniwa stones, the manufacturer here opted for silicon carbide, mainly because it is harder than aluminum oxide. Although the stone wears out faster, it gains an advantage when grinding harder blades (over 63 HRC) and is thus more effective.
The advantage of sharpening with a whetstone is that by using the correct techniques, we can achieve a remarkable sharpness of the blade. However, it is necessary to learn the correct technique.
For easier sharpening, we recommend purchasing a Stone Holder (Sink Bridge) to ensure mess-free and a stable position of the stone during sharpening.
